YMMV / The Bard's Tale

Go To

  • Aluminum Christmas Trees:
    • Many a first-time player assumed the Nuckelavee to be a nonsensical monster made up for the game, but it's actually a genuine mythological creature from the Orkney Islands' folklore, as can be attested by the eventual creation of a Nuckelavee trope page.
    • The Haggis monster boss seems just the right level of ridiculous for the game creators to have completely made it up, but it's very likely a nod to the real-life hoax which jokes that haggis is made from the flesh of an actual animal, the "wild haggis".
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment:
    • The The Chosen One/It's Bad Luck To Be You songs, which always come out of nowhere and are never commented on by anyone, not even the Bard and Narratir.
    • The Zombie break dancing contest has no explanation for why it happened. Even though it becomes a Chekhov's Gag for the Neutral ending, why The Dead Can Dance never gets any reasoning for it happening beyond the Rule of Funny.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: The hero is a sexist Jerkass who treats women he sleeps with like crap, laughs at a kid who was killed in front of him, and routinely kills people, threatens people or steals from them or all three. It's actually hilarious.
  • Player Punch: The Dog's death in the middle of the game after him kicking around near The Bard all game. Fortunately, he comes back later.
  • Polished Port: The mobile port, in joystick mode, controls surprisingly well for a console and PC game running on a touch screen (with options for lefties as well), it can automatically default the additional data entirely to an external SD card (put things into perspective, most only put part of the data on the device, some just put it all on the device), and it has separate downloads for a low-res version (only just over a gb) and the full version (the full 3.3gb) for those with mobile devices that either have low storage, low specs, or both.
