  • Harsher in Hindsight: Coupled with a heavy dose of Tear Jerker. On Sulk, there is a cover of "Gloomy Sunday", a famous and oft-covered song from the 1930s composed by the Hungarian pianist Rezso Seress, done most famously by Billie Holiday in 1941. It's also infamously known as the "Hungarian Suicide Song", due to an urban legend that it was responsible for a spate of suicides in Hungary in the 1930s after it was released. note Guess what happened to Billy?
  • Nightmare Fuel: Quite a few songs from Sulk and their earlier singles, like "Nude Spoons", "Ulcragyceptimol", and "Bab de la Bap".
  • Tear Jerker: Pretty much everything relating to Billy's suicide in 1997.
    • The cover of "Gloomy Sunday" on Sulk.
    • While not Associates songs, "Cut Here" by The Cure and "Say", by The Creatures, a Siouxsie and the Banshees side project both are about Billy's death, as he was a friend of both Robert Smith and Siouxsie, and are both pretty heartbreaking, "Cut Here" especially.
