• Nausea Fuel:
  • Klaus ripping the pregnant woman's fetus out. It was so realistic that director Joe D'Amato actually got in trouble with the police over the scene and the film itself consequently became a member of Video Nasties. ^note The fetus was actually a skinned rabbit — not that that helped.
  • At the end, the recently disemboweled Klaus starts eating his own spilled innards as he dies.
• Signature Scene: The fetus and intestines eating.
• Special Effects Failure: The sailor's obviously fake severed head, and the liberal use of dummies in 2000.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: Klaus is presumably intended to be a Tragic Monster, but his backstory is treated as merely an afterthought, and as a result he comes off as being little more than a mindless brute. In addition, the flashback scenes are shot in such a way as to make it unintentionally appear that he suddenly decided to eat his wife and son for no real reason.
• Visual Effects of Awesome: The aforementioned head in the bucket aside, the makeup and gore effects are among the most spectacular ever featured in a low-budget exploitation flick. The fetus-eating scene in particular was so convincing that the filmmakers had to repeatedly assure the authorities, including the BBFC, that none of it was real.
