YMMV / The Adventure Begins

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The rearrangements of Troublesome Trucks and especially Really Useful Engine are wonderful renditions that greatly mixes two of the show's most iconic themes from the Alcroft era with the more modern soundtrack of the CGI-era.
  • Broken Base: The film's more pragmatic approach to adapting the first two The Railway Series books has caused a great deal of this. Some don't mind the changes (even preferring some of them) and are just happy to see a recent Thomas film that actively ties itself to the Railway Series, on top of arguing that there's already the first season of the show for those who desire more a faithful adaptation of the first two books, with the film's liberties working to distinguish itself from the first season. Others however, dislike the approach and feel the changes to the characters to make it more in line with the later seasons does a disservice to the original stories, on top of muddying several aspects from the original stories (such as Thomas' character arc).
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The return of several classic themes, after many years. This includes "Really Useful Engine" and "Troublesome Trucks", which are used as insert songs.
  • Nightmare Fuel: James' crash. While it happened off-screen in "Thomas and the Breakdown Train", here we get to see it play out in its entirety. We even get a shot of the guard looking back in terror, just before his brakevan buckles and derails on its side. The bonus of hearing James' screams for help and the sinister remix of the Runaway theme throughout don't help at all.
    • It's made even worse when the cars come off the rails. You can hear the Troublesome Trucks SCREAMING, COMPLETELY TERRIFIED. They're the ones that caused it in the first place, but still!
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Some creative liberties with the stories are meant with contention, particularly using the more contemporary characterisations of the engines.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Glynn is an old, coffee pot-style engine who formerly ran Thomas' branch line. However, he only appears for a few seconds to essentially wish Thomas luck. What's more, it's never explained why he's on an overgrown siding, and he's never seen again, after that point. Fortunately, he does show up again in Season 20.
