YMMV / The 13th Floor Elevators

  • Covered Up:
    • "You're Gonna Miss Me" was originally recorded by Roky Erickson's previous band The Spades and released as a single in 1965, the year prior to the 13th Floor Elevators version of the song.
    • On the other side of the coin, many people know "Slip Inside This House" from Primal Scream's Screamadelica. "If You Have Ghosts" is also better known for being covered by Ghost than it is by being written and performed by Roky.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: While Roky Erickson and Tommy Hall get the lion's share of attention in discussions of the band, many fans feel that Stacy Sutherland was their bedrock member, basically becoming the main songwriter and musical leader by the time they recorded Bull of the Woods.
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: Compare the Epic Riff from "Tried to Hide" with The Kinks' "Come on Now". "Levitation" uses a sped-up version of the same riff.
  • Tear Jerker: "I Had to Tell You" comes across as an ode to Roky's deteriorating mental state, telling his loved ones not to worry about him as he descends into madness.
If you fear I'll lose my spirit
    Like a drunkard's wasted wine
Don't you even think about it
    I'm feeling fine
