• Alternate Character Interpretation:
  • Does Tatterhood really turn herself beautiful at the end of the story, or does the prince just learn to look at her a different way? Different versions of the story support different interpretations; at least one version has the prince completely flabbergasted at Tatterhood's newfound beauty... causing the beautiful sister to react with confusion because she's always seen Tatterhood that way and doesn't see any difference.
  • The prince: A Jerkass much too obsessed with beauty, or understandably miffed that he's more or less being forced to marry a girl he doesn't even know?
• Ugly Cute: Tatterhood is frequently described as ugly, but several illustrated versions of the story manage to make her look freakish or even inhuman while still being kind of adorable.
