YMMV / Sven Co-op

  • Broken Base: The gameplay changes made to the original Half-Life arsenal in version 4.0. Some appreciated the increased realism the changes brought, such as changing the infamous double-barreled SPAS-12 of the original game into the hybrid pump-action/semi-automatic shotgun it is in reality, and removing the grenade launcher from the MP5 and putting it on a new weapon. Others felt the changes were unneeded and took away from the Half-Life feel of the mod. The Steam version fixed this by allowing players and mappers to use the original weapon behavior.
  • Demonic Spiders:
    • On higher difficulties, the Alien Slaves/Vortigaunts: they have a good amount of range, tend to show up in groups, and if that isn't enough, can resurrect each other, which means that players are often scrambling to kill all of them before one of them can resurrect all of the other dead Slaves.
    • Ottos with Desert Eagles (one of the most powerful pistols in the game) are generally highly accurate with them, and tend to keep their distance, which makes them very annoying to deal with.
    • The Xen Commander/Tor. He can summon Alien Grunts that distract you as he shoots an energy that lifts you up and let fall damage do its job for him. Think you can just Zerg Rush him? Too bad, he can launch and shockwave you guys away.
    • Basically any Strong enemies in the mod got a buff in 4.6, Gonomes, Alien Grunts, and Human Grunts can run and fire as well as melee you.
  • Memetic Mutation: Due to how easily spammable they are, the two cries for help ("TAKE COVER!" and "MEDIC!") tend to be repeated by the playerbase.
  • Older Than They Think: Many newcomers would be surprised Sven Co-op was first released all the way back in 1999, only one year after Half-Life's launch.
  • Scrappy Mechanic: Survival mode. Instead of respawning within 5 seconds, you stay dead until the players reach a checkpoint. This has a number of problems. First, enemies are far stronger and not all maps provide armor, meaning that you'll end up dying in seconds no matter what you do. Second, it's a huge middle finger for late joiners, who start off dead and can't play.
  • That One Boss: The newly introduced boss from 4.9 which is Kingpin from the Dummied Out beta of Half-Life, he is a total nightmare in small closed spaces (Such as Sectore.) Or at times the newly updated Tetris which the final area is open space, (While being pounced on by roided up Panthereyes.), they have an passive shield that resists most to all types of damage, a lightning attack that can 1-2 shot you if you have full armor or not, a charged AOE homing attack that can kill your teammates in large quantities, all stacked neatly on a good chunk of HP which ensures it`s survival.
  • That One Level: Act 3 of Residue Processing and Act 2 of Surface Tension in the original Half-Life campaign, due to the tripmines. It's even worse in the latter when somebody constantly deliberately sets them off, causing the map to restart due to the entire facility exploding as the result. Many servers opt to simply remove the tripmines entirely to combat this, turning the level into more of a transition between Acts 2 and 4.
