  • Narm: The scene where Chakotay tries to make contact with the aliens is supposed to show him finally embracing his Native American heritage after a lifetime of trying to run away from it. However, the fact that Chakotay is stripped buck naked in the scene can make what was intended as an important character moment unintentionally hilarious.
  • Values Dissonance: The episode is essentially a time capsule of all the worst aspects of the Magical Native American trope that tended to run through Hollywood in the 1990s. In its attempt to glorify Native Americans, it ends up perpetrating stereotypes (even if they're ones not intended to be negative) about them; a hallmark of the era's mindset that portraying them positively was more important than portraying them accurately.
