• Captain Obvious Aesop: Slavery's bad, m'kay?
• Cliché Storm: Even at the time, just about every plot point in this episode had already been done to death in pulp sci-fi. Even of Trek's own tropes, Kirk sounds bored to death of his own charming to get out of trouble routine.
• Hilarious in Hindsight: Bones complains about Spock telling him the odds over a decade before The Empire Strikes Back made a similar line famous.
• Older Than They Think: This episode introduced the concept of transport beaming between star systems. Of course, it's the technology of a Sufficiently Advanced race, and not the Federation or the Klingons.
