- Angst? What Angst?: The jocular tone of the epilogue is somewhat jarring, considering the deaths of Kirk's brother and sister-in-law are not even mentioned. (A more sombre scene that would have immediately preceded it and wrapped up that subplot was filmed but cut for time.)
- Ho Yay: Needless to say, Kirk and Spock. The aforementioned Angst? What Angst? combined with lines such as "I need you Spock" and "Your affection to Spock" make it seem like Kirk is much more concerned about Spock than he was of his own brother. To be fair, there is nothing he could have done to save Sam but Spock is still rescueable.
- Narm: The death of "Sam" Kirk, considering the reveal of Shatner with a fake mustache. In all fairness, it worked on 1960s television sets, enough that it did look like a different person; digitally cleaned-up visuals and high definition haven't done the scene any favors in that regard.
