  • Epileptic Trees: Though the TR-116 used by the assassin (and later Ezri) is mentioned as having had the targeting sensor and micro-transporter added onto the design of what for all intents and purposes was just a standard-issue projectile weapon, some fans feel that they're integrated into the weapon's design just a little too well for it to be a hackjob redesign by a lunatic, and that it was more than likely designed as an assassination weapon from the outset, with O'Brien either actively covering up the truth of the weapon, or his information about it being incomplete. It's not hard to imagine that Section 31 used it for this, or planned this.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: The TR-116, Starfleet's apparently sole foray into projectile weapons, was begun not as a means to combat the Borg and their ability to adapt to energy weapons, but for use in environments where Technobabble means phasers don't work, and it was abandoned because new Technobabble phasers were developed which did work. The design wasn't dusted off and issued for combat against the Borg and the Borg aren't even mentioned in conjunction with the weapon, despite many noting how Worf's big-ass Klingon knife was superior to Starfleet's latest phaser rifle in fighting off Borg drones. So many fans were wondering "why not replicate a bunch of assault rifles" when confronted with the Borg that this kinetic weapon having nothing to do with them, and never being seen outside this episode (except as a special craftable item in Star Trek Online) can feel like a huge waste. The Star Trek Novel 'Verse finally did show TR-116s being employed en masse against the Borg when they invaded the Federation in the Star Trek: Destiny trilogy.
