  • Heartwarming Moments: "Just enough light to begin".
    • And the last words of the book: "You are always welcome, Doctor."
    • Early in the novel, when he sees the idealistic Dr. Parmak at work, and hoping to improve Cardassian society: "Perhaps there's hope for us yet."
    • Garak intervenes to protect a Dabo girl from a drunk Klingon warrior, who proceeds to chase after Garak in a rage. The Klingon ends up getting stuck trying to follow Garak through a confined maintenance tube and begins to suffer a panic attack. Garak (claustrophobic himself), stays with the Klingon and helps him to stay calm until O'Brien can extract him. The Klingon ends up being quite grateful to Garak for the help.
    • In the Epilogue, Garak finds out what has become of Palandine's daughter, Kel. She has become an assistant to the Guide of the Oralian Way, a religious movement on Cardassia. Despite his own antagonistic relationship with Kel's father Barkan Lokar, Garak notes that she inherited positive traits from both Palandine and Barkan.
  • Moment of Awesome: The Basement scene. An unusual example, but it's definitely a CMOA for Garak. Even if it's quiet, understated and simple.
    "This is not my place".
  • Role Reprise: For the unabridged audiobook's release in 2023, Andrew Robinson reprises his role as Garak for the narration.
  • Tear Jerker: Garak's ranting in the rain.
"There is no home anymore! Can't you see, it's gone!!!"
