YMMV / Sponge Bob Square Pants S 9 E 4 Little Yellow Book Bumper To Bumper

"Little Yellow Book"

  • Alas, Poor Scrappy: Many fans who hate SpongeBob happen to feel bad for him in this episode.
  • Broken Base: There are fans that felt bad for SpongeBob and fans that believed that SpongeBob deserved to have his diary read. Also fans who thought he deserved it, only to feel bad for him anyway.
  • Darkness-Induced Audience Apathy: None of the characters are even remotely likable from Squidward being a massive Jerkass to SpongeBob by reading his diary and bragging it towards everyone, the citizens of Bikini bottom giving Squidward a Disproportionate Retribution for reading it and being massive hypocrites throughout the episode and SpongeBob being an idiot for leaving his own diary unguarded. The only possible exception is Mr. Krabs, who was not involved in reading SpongeBob's diary like the hypocritical citizens and did call Squidward out on what he did while still not taking part in the town's disproportionate retribution on him.

  • Designated Hero: The residents are supposedly in the right for harshly punishing Squidward for something that they did too. While Squidward technically deserves all of this, their hypocrisy really doesn't make them come off as any better than him. The only thing that makes them slightly relatable is that they do not partake in reading SpongeBob's real diary when Squidward starts reading it.
  • Idiot Plot: If SpongeBob's diary wasn't left in the open, most, if not all, of the plot could have been avoided.
  • Memetic Mutation: The scene where SpongeBob acts like a chicken is used as the picture of the Mocking SpongeBob meme.
  • Moral Event Horizon: Squidward has arguably crossed the line here once he remorselessly humiliates SpongeBob by giving away all his secrets at the Krusty Krab.
  • Squick: Patrick is in a dumpster when he finds a ketchup packet and says that it'll go great with an old diaper.

  • The Woobie: SpongeBob. He has been humiliated by Squidward, and when he forgives Squidward after everything, the latter humiliates him once more.

"Bumper To Bumper"

  • Character Rerailment:
    • Mrs. Puff is much better in this episode than she was back in "Demolition Doofus."
    • Another thing this episode tries to do is deconstruct SpongeBob's flanderization when it comes to his bad driving, which had been getting worse since Season 2. In it, SpongeBob is back to just being incredibly nervous behind the wheel, which just so happens to cause him to do tons of property damage. When the show revived in 2015, the flanderization took over once again.
  • Tear Jerker: SpongeBob breaking down to tears after Mrs. Puff harshly tells him that he's failed his boating test once again and tells him to get out of her sight.
