• Broken Base: The ending: Many fans despise the ending for Spongebob and Patrick being blamed for what was King Neptune's fault; other fans see it as a Karma Houdini Warranty for both parties' Idiot Houdini status post-Flanderization.
• Unintentionally Unsympathetic: King Neptune. He's apparently meant to be sympathetic since he's depressed that his banished son, Triton, is not able to show up to his 5,000th birthday party. Then we learn his backstory on how he disapproved of how Triton wanted to use his powers for the greater good instead of using them to harass innocent underwater citizens, so he eventually locks him up in a cage for this. On top of Triton not getting any comeuppance for his actions, Neptune only truly accepts Triton after the latter's Roaring Rampage of Revenge and sends an angry mob after SpongeBob and Patrick.
