- Accidental Innuendo: "I don't know what I'm doin, I'm just doin' it!"
- Accidental Nightmare Fuel: In real-life angler fish species, the males metamorphose into a parasitic form that attaches onto a much larger female. In this show, this relationship is actually shown with Lu the football-type angler fish and her husband Bob, who amounts to little more than a tiny, talking face embedded in the side of Lu's body. To its credit, the show is very matter-of-fact about this relationship and does not portray it as anything unusual or disturbing; but it's still absolutely horrifying.
- Adaptation Displacement: Very few people know that its based on a stage play called ImaginOcean
- Broken Base: On one hand, a few people praise it for teaching about oceanography (something that not a lot of kids shows cover), but on the other hand, it has a large amount of detractors who call it one of PBS' worst programs, due to its nightmarish animation, grating voices, and slightly gross content.
- Funny Moments: From the episode Seal Sitters:Chipper: At least now you have an excuse for that messy algae bed, Tidy!Tidy: Nobody asked for your opinion, Chipper! THANK YOU!
- Squick: One "Get Your Feet Wet" segment is about how parrotfish poop out sandy beaches.
