YMMV / Sorry to Bother You

Go To

  • Ass Pull: Even given the movie's "Capitalism Is Bad" message, The Reveal that WorryFree is trying to make literal workhorses out of people through combining human and horse DNA comes out of left field for some.
  • Awesome Music: Pretty much the entire soundtrack by The Coup, but the biggest standout would be the film's end credits theme, "OYAHYTT".
    • The film's instrumental score by art-pop duo tUnE-yArDs is also a thing to behold, perfectly capturing the film's absurdist feel.
  • Award Snub: Many were disappointed that Sorry to Bother You did not get a single Academy Award nomination, particularly for Best Picture, Director and Original Screenplay for Boots Riley’s work — although he claimed he made no effort to campaign for the film and was not seeking awards.
  • Broken Base:
    • The Reveal that WorryFree is transforming its workers into half-human/half-horse hybrids to speed up production. While absolutely nobody saw it coming on first viewing, some feel it fits with the movie's anti-capitalist message while also being strangely hilarious at the same time, not to mention surprisingly foreshadowed. Others believe it to be an immensely strange twist that puts them off the rest of the movie.
    • The last scene of the movie shows equisapien!Cash and a group of other equisapiens breaking into Lift's house in order to take revenge. Some people like it for the Catharsis Factor. Others feel that the film should have ended with the Wham Shot of Cash's oversized nostrils.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With BlacKkKlansman, a movie which director Boots Riley criticized when it came out mere months after his film. Downplayed since both films received positive reviews from critics and moviegoers, and Riley is a fan of Spike Lee's work in general.
  • Friendly Fandoms: Grey Wolves like this movie a lot for its openly anti-capitalist message. It helps that Patton Oswalt and David Cross, who have prominent roles in this film, were guests on the podcast.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • The strikers managing to stop the riot police from breaking through the picket line with Detroit's statues, and later the equisapiens showing up to save the workers from the strikebreakers in the climax.
    • The final scene of the film, where Cash leads a group of equisapiens to the house of Steve Lift himself to exact some well-deserved karmic retribution for turning them all into horse people.
  • Paranoia Fuel: You’ll never want to work for a corporation after watching this film.
  • Shocking Moments: There are very few viewers who didn't go "WTF" at the sight of the first equisapien.
  • Special Effects Failure: While the animatronics are impressive, the equisapiens just never really feel right, namely due to their dead eyes and stiff mouth movements. Of course, considering the rest of the movie's tone, this may have been intentional.
