YMMV / Shin Mazinger

Go To

  • Awesome Music: When you've got JAM Project doing the opening themes, that's a given. Kanjite Knight, the first opening, deserves special mention.
  • Crazy Is Cool: Let's just go with the easy route and say everything, but, beyond anything, Juzo Kabuto.
  • Fan Nickname: "Shin Mazinger Z" is never used by the series, but fans use it to distinguish the Shin version of the mech from the original. It's also used for the show itself. The actual title is "Shin Mazinger Impact! Z Chapter", but everybody just calls it "Shin Mazinger Z".
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: One episode of Duck Dodgers that homaged Godzilla and several 70s anime had a Mazinger Expy that could turn into a giant fist.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Baron Ashura. Sure, they're a villain, but it's like the whole show is against them...and that's on top of being a cyborg made from the remains of both a male and a female Mycenae priest who were romantically involved! Of course, they get the last laugh.
  • Magnificent Bastard: Baron Ashura is the right-hand of Dr. Hell. Created from the fused and preserved corpses of Mycenaean lovers Tristan and Isolde, Ashura acts the loyal servitor, engaging Mazinger multiple times and proving their strategic acumen by leading robotic monsters to attack Tokyo, constantly pushing Mazinger to the brink and even using a hostage gambit with Sayaka to force Kouji Kabuto's compliance. Finally allying with Kouji against Dr. Hell to secure Hell's destruction, Ashura reveals the reason was to resurrect the Mycenaean empire and caps their plan by ending their own life to unlock the seal and unleash Mycenae back upon the world.
  • Memetic Mutation:
    • It's name is. It's name is. It's name is. It's name is. It's name is. It's name is. (Ad infinitum)
    • SUPER ASHURA, due to his/her fight with Mazinger Z in episode 3, putting him on the same level as Master SUPER ASIA.
  • Moment of Awesome: More like a Crowning Super Robot Show of Awesome.
  • Most Wonderful Sound: The sound which Mazinger makes when Pilder docks and Mazinger's eyes lit up. Its the sound that proclaims incoming Badassness and ass whooping.
  • Narm Charm: The 1000-Rocket Punches. It starts out with a literal hailstorm of Rocket Punches, followed up by the Mazinger Army revealing that they've secretly housed extra fists inside their bodies for a swarm of rocket punches that hit Hell King Gordon absolutely everywhere on it's body, with Kouji calling the shots as they embed themselves into the Mechanical Beast before lifting it off of the ground and then retreating to merge into a single, gigantic, rocket punch which tears Hell King Gordon into two pieces, and if this wasn't enough, Koji and Juzo literally transform Mazinger Z itself into a gigantic fist using the God Scrander to preform the Big Bang Punch. It sounds completely ridiculous when describing it, but in motion, it's completely crazy awesome.
  • Older Than They Think: Zeus tossing his arm as a Rocket Punch was originally done nine years earlier, by a Real Robot no less.
  • Slow-Paced Beginning: The first six episodes are a slow crawl of exposition and introductions. Around episodes 7 & 8, however, the pace starts to pick up.
  • Viewer Gender Confusion: Baron Ashura's body is half male and half female...literally, they were made from one half of the remains of Isolde (the woman) and one half of the remains of Tristan (the man). This leads to the kind of confusion you'd expect as to what to refer to them as.
  • Values Dissonance: The duel between Kabuto and Lorelai simply must go through because of the wishes of their fathers. Despite their own wishes, they are forced to battle—thankfully, it's played for the tragedy of it all.
