YMMV / Shadows Over Hell

Go To

  • Catharsis Factor: After all the shit Blitzo puts Moxxie through both in the show and in the story, seeing Moxxie finally snap, punch his boss in the gut, threaten to shoot him and call him out on his selfish and reckless behavior, is cathartic as fuck.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Stella falls quote neatly into this. Much like in canon, she is very short tempered, bigoted and critical of Stolas' affair with Blitzo. And her relationship with Octavia is very, very flawed, as she often puts what's best for the family's reputation above the needs of her daughter. However, she still gets moments dedicated to her, particularly in Chapter 3 and 14, showing that despite all this, Stella truly does love her daughter and years of having to look perfect and keep her family from falling apart, in the eyes of her family & Hell, is heavily weighing her down and clouding her judgment. And on some level, she is not wrong for worrying about her family's reputation, considering how a scandal like Stolas dating a low class imp might affect all of them.
  • Les Yay: The friendship between Loona & Octavia, is mainly meant to be a best friends to sisters-like dynamic, but there's still plenty of moments where they fall into this category. Their amicable pet names, the way they are often the first to comfort the other, the fact both are in some way each other's first real friend and just the overall close, loving relationship they have with one another, feels much more personal than just a friendship. They even sleep together at the end of Chapter 15. The author seems to be aware of this, as they've made a few remarks poking fun of the idea of the two of them being a couple. Not helping matters is Loona revealing they kissed at one point during Chapter 44, even if she admits to only liking Via as a sister.
  • Unexpected Character: The appearance of Hazbin Hotel characters such as Charlie, Vaggie and Alastor in Chapter 17, might come off as a surprise to some readers, as up until that point, the story had mostly stuck to the Helluva Boss side of the world, with only passing references to any of the other cast. Vox's sudden appearance in Chapter 18, can be especially surprising, given that as of the time the chapter was written, he had yet to make an appearance in the show proper, other than a few cameos.
  • The Woobie: Poor Octavia has it rough. She's often pressured by her mother into a lifestyle she doesn't enjoy, has to constantly endure having to listen to her parents fighting, has to put up with her dad's affair with Blitzo and frequently experiences horrific nightmares. She has no real friends among her fellow royals, and the one she does have with Loona, the few good things in her life, is frowned upon by Stella and much of Hell's upper class. And then the second half happens, and Octavia is thrusted into a world of chaos, madness and death, forced to kill demons much stronger than her to survive and baring witness to some truly horrific sights. When she finally returns home, she is utterly shaken and near broken, barley capable of clinging onto her sanity. And as of that’s not bad enough, she ripped away from her home and family by Mother at the end of 30, and sent into another dimension where she’s spent god knows how long, begging and pleading for help while avoiding the gaze of the Eldritch Horror looking for her.
