YMMV / Roll Over and Die

Go To

  • Adorkable: Both Flum and Milkit are this in spades to the point Eterna and Sara think they are this In-Universe.
  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • Was Jean's motivation to abuse and eventually sell Flum as a slave merely because he was fed up with her apparently being useless or was it because he saw Flum as potential romantic rival for Cyrill? Was it a mixture of both?
    • When Milkit removed her bandages to reveal her disfigured face to Flum, was it only because she saw herself as worthless and wanted Flum to get rid of her or was she giving Flum a Secret Test of Character to see if Flum was really different from her previous owners.
    • When Flum is having difficulty comprehending Milkit’s Love Confession at the end of Volume 3/Episode 4, is it because Flum thinks Milkit could do better than her? Does Flum think no one should love her at all? A mixture? In Volume One, she believes her heart has become Dark. In Volume 3, she expressed concern that Milkit might come to hate her, and she was comforted when Milkit assured her she wouldn’t.
  • And You Thought It Would Fail: During the days of the original Web Novel run, the author believed the series wasn't likely to succeed due to it being a mix of different genres of Yuri, Dark Fantasy, Horror, and Adventure. Fast forward several years later, the series had a successful Web Novel run, it was picked up for a Light Novel adaptation, and a manga adaptation.
  • Catharsis Factor: The series runs on this trope.
    • It happens as early as the second chapter of the Light Novel when Flum dismembers and beheads the slave merchant that killed other slaves he considered dead weight for entertainment.
    • There is also the ramifications of Jean's impulsive decision to sell Flum into slavery biting him the ass. He originally thought getting rid of Flum would make their group stronger, but it becomes apparent the opposite was true. Seeing Eterna abandoning them during the second intermission chapter was satisfying for readers.
    • Whenever someone does something horrible to Milkit, Flum makes it a point to inflict a karmic punishment on them which usually is Karmic Death.
  • Complete Monster:
    • "The Girl Who Wanted to be Boring" & "Flum's Blessing in Disguise" (Episode 1, Chapters 1-2): The unnamed slave merchant was a greedy, sadistic coward who would indoctrinate babies into believing that their only purpose was to be sold to others and make him money. The merchant showed no regard to who he sold his slaves, and if he couldn't make a profit off of his "merchandise", he would have slaves eaten by ghouls and would turn their deaths into a spectacle for his sadistic pleasure. The merchant would trick the slaves into feeling false hope by offering them a cursed sword to defend themselves against the ghouls that would in reality melt them into a puddle if they touched it. When heroine Flum Apricot begged for mercy, the merchant blamed her for "tricking" him into losing a lot of money and told her the only way she could make up for the sin of being useless was to die or she could take her chances with the cursed sword. When Flum turned the tables by being able to wield the cursed sword and killed his ghouls, the Slave Merchant begged Flum for his life. despite condemning her and others to death for his entertainment mere moments ago.
    • "The Lies and Losses of the Necromantic Memories" (Episode 4): Satils Francois was a noblewoman who appeared to run legitimate businesses, but it was all a front to hide her dealings with the slave trade and the Church of Origin. She had Susy Chalmers tortured and murdered, then proceeded to fund the necromancy research of her widower, Dafydd. She had dealings with the slave merchant, who provided her with beautiful girls, such as Milkit, to take delight in breaking them. When her subordinates built her a private torture room, Satils murdered them to hide the secret. Resurrected after her death at Flum's hands, Satils gained control of the Necromancy Focal Core that allowed her to turn all the dead people revived with Origin cores in Shoel Village into monsters, including Dafydd's family. Without hesitation, Satils forced the dead to murder their still living relatives, eventually fusing them into a monster. She proceeded to absorbed Dafydd because he outlived his usefulness while mocking him about how she was responsible for his misery. Capturing Flum, Satils tortured Flum using the Voice of the Legion of all the dead people to the point Flum briefly forget everything, including her own name, before Satils proceeded to go on a rampage to kill Flum's friends and any of the remaining survivors.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Why was Milkit the only other survivor of the massacre when the Slave Owner unleashed the ghouls to feed on the slaves? It was because she remained perfectly still as indicated in the Light Novel and manga adaptation. Similar to predatory animals, the ghouls reacted to movement. When the other slaves besides Flum and Milkit panicked, the ghouls devoured them first. The ghouls only attacked Flum when she made a move to take her chances with the cursed weapon.
    • In the first Intermission of the LN, when Jean announces he convinced Flum to go back home, Maria is depicted with the strongest reaction after Cyrill, biting her lip and looking down. This looks quite weird during the first read, as Flum's monologue already established she and Maria never interacted much, something Maria confirms in a conversation with Linus later in the same Intermission. With the later reveal that Maria is part of the conspiracy of the Church of Origin, it becomes obvious in hindsight that she is pissed that Jean unwittingly ruined Origin's plans by sending Flum away.
    • During Flum’s final battle with Dein, Ink’s Origin powered eyes originally were against Flum. Eventually, Ink was able to subconsciously gain control of her eyes because she recognized Flum and turned them against Dein. Suddenly, Ink being kept isolated most of her life makes more sense because it prevented her from developing attachments. Her Origin Eyes had been used to kill people who were potential threats or got in the way of eliminating said threats. When they attacked Sara for knowing too much, the eyes killed her surrogate brothers and innocent civilians while pursuing her. However, when the Sara was at the mercy of the eyes, the eyes hesitated long enough for Sara to be spared because Ink had become friends with Sara as well.
  • Love to Hate: Readers love to hate Jean, and they love it when things don’t go his way.
  • Memetic Mutation: Flum Punch!
  • Moe: Milkit’s face underneath the bandages after she is cured. Even with the bandages on, she’s adorable.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • Jean betraying and selling Flum into slavery already crossed it. When he personally tortured her by branding her himself while enjoying with sadistic pleasure it made it impossible for him to ever redeem himself.
    • The slave merchant puts all the slaves, including Flum and Milkit, in a prison that he considered worthless. He then unleashed ghouls on them to eat them for his entertainment. He even throws in a cursed weapon that will kill anyone who pulls it in an attempt to defend themselves.
    • Milkit’s previous owner, Satils, crossed that when she poisoned Milkit just for looking prettier than her. She then decides to have Milkit kidnapped, so she can torture her further during Volume 3/Episode 4, and she gets even worse after she is resurrected.
  • Never Live It Down: Why Cyrill is considered The Scrappy. Regardless of the crushing guilt she felt later on, readers refuse to forget her cold treatment of Flum at the beginning of the story and her refusal to intervene when she witnessed Jean abusing Flum.
  • One True Pairing: As if it could be anyone other than Flum/Milkit.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: Readers began to turn around on Cyrill after her "The Reason You Suck" Speech exchange with Maria, where she not only fully admits to her failings but regains a bit of her heroic resolve after being rendered ineffective for so long by her guilt.
  • The Scrappy: Cyrill does not get much love from readers due to her poor first impression. While it was established that she originally treated Flum like a friend, her treatment of Flum at the beginning of the series and being an Accomplice by Inaction regarding Jean's treatment of Flum has not been forgotten even if she did later regret it.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: During Volume 04/Episode 05, Maria gives Cyrill a massive "The Reason You Suck" Speech which includes calling her out on betraying Flum and indirectly being responsible for getting Flum sold into slavery. Unlike most examples, Cyrill accepts it and gives her own "The Reason You Suck" Speech to Maria, and this is a step Cyrill takes to rescue herself from the Scrappy pit.
  • The Woobie: Both Flum and Milkit are this.
    • Due to Flum’s perceived uselessness, she is betrayed and sold into slavery by Jean who personally brands her with the Slave Brand. He even convinced her the others agreed to this which was a lie.
    • Milkit was born to be sold into slavery. She was mistreated by all of her slave masters. One of them poisoned her for simply being prettier than her. She was reduced to a broken slave girl before meeting Flum.
