YMMV / Rock 'n' Roll High School

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Well, it does feature The Ramones after all...
  • Crosses the Line Twice: In the sequel, Principal Vadar's regime is built on this and taking Disproportionate Retribution up to eleven.
  • Cult Classic: It's especially well-liked among Ramones fans.
  • Moral Event Horizon:
    • By having her two henchmen eat Riff Randall's goldfish and THEN use force to steal Riff's (and her friend's) tickets, Mrs. Togar asked to be deposed as principal... especially after Riff's classmates and McGree found out the two nearly couldn't attend the concert because of her.
    • Vadar from the sequel crosses it in her very first scene and keeps right on going. And it's supposed to be seen as silly, albeit for all the wrong reasons.
  • Narm Charm: It being an 70s film, it's this.
    • The Ramones' acting. It's Adorkable to say the least, especially Joey's "aw, shucks" face when Mr. McGree calls the Ramones "the Beethovens of our time."
  • Retroactive Recognition: Fritz the hall monitor is Loren Lester.
  • Values Dissonance: Angel Dust's final fate (getting a "body search" performed on her by two boys already established as perverts) definitely wouldn't fly today, with sexual harassment being a major issue in Hollywood.
  • Values Resonance: The film is well regarded by most feminists well into The New '10s thanks to Kate and Riff being well-rounded and interesting protagonists who are neither useless Girly Girls nor adherents of the Real Women Don't Wear Dresses attitude, with them both owning their sexuality and the film positively focuses on their intellects instead of their sex appeal. Kate's knowledge of chemistry comes in handy at the end of the film and is even more resonant due to the encouragement of women and girls in STEM while Riff not only wants to sleep with Joey Ramone but wants to be a creative collaborator.
