YMMV / Rik Mayall

Go To

  • Awesome Ego: To say that Rik was confident in his abilities as a performer was quite the understatement.
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • "Favourites aside, you might be surprised to hear the single piece of verse that has most moved me is a quote from the lyric of Cliff Richard's old hit 'The Young Ones'. It was in 1984 when the Young Ones TV show which I had co-written was a big hit. Rik Mayall and I were on tour together. After the show we always signed autographs for those that wanted them. One night a mother came back with her son, he was about eleven and was, she explained, a colossal Young Ones fan, adding that he did not have long to live. The boy was embarrassed and tongue-tied, and of course nobody really knew what to say, so his mother asked Rik to write something for the boy on a tour poster. I did not envy Rik at that moment; what can you write, off the cuff, to a dying boy who adores you? In what I feel was a moment of inspiration Rik wrote a quote from Cliff Richard's old song which Rik had sung over the titles of the series. He wrote 'Young Ones shouldn't be afraid'. The boy and his mother seemed much moved by this thought, as indeed was I." - Ben Elton
    • A fan has created a fake British Heritage sign in tribute of Rik, referenceing the opening credits of Bottom where his character Richie punched his friend in the balls. There's even an online petition to try and get an official memorial installed.
      • As of November 2014, a memorial bench now stands close to the plaque and the location of the original bench from the opening credits.
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The reactions to Rik's death, especially from his Heterosexual Life-Partner Adrian Edmondson, who also helped carry Rik's coffin.
"There were times when Rik and I were writing together when we almost died laughing. They were some of the most carefree stupid days I ever had, and I feel privileged to have shared them with him. And now he's died for real. Without me. Selfish bastard."
    • Rik's youngest daughter Bonnie also gave a heartwarming tribute to her late father.
"My dad was loved not only by my family, but by many many others. We will never forget him and neither will the world. R.I.P to the man, the myth, the legend - my wonderful, generous, foul-mouthed and hysterical father. My idol now and forever. We love you daddy."
