YMMV / Reign of the Supermen

Go To

  • Character Rerailment: Darkseid in this film is much more in line with his common portrayal as The Chessmaster, as opposed to the Generic Doomsday Villain that he was in Justice League: War.
  • Crosses the Line Twice:
    • Lex Luthor using Mercy as a Human Shield against Eradicator's Death Ray is exactly the sort of despicable thing we've come to expect from him; but him thanking her first, and replying to her confused "For what?" by throwing her in the way of said Death Ray is masterful Black Comedy.
    • Lex has Dabney Donovan killed by all the monsters in his lab for being unable to keep from spilling info Lex would rather be kept secret. As he and a horrified Superboy are exiting the lab, they hear Donovan's dying screams and an annoyed Lex says "He still can't keep his mouth shut."
  • I Knew It!: A lot of people correctly guessed that Superman would switch to his DC Rebirth (more specifically, his Superman Reborn) outfit after his revival.
  • Jerkass Woobie: Hank Henshaw is a dangerous supervillain with an insane, irrational grudge, but it's hard not to pity him. He's a twisted, broken man who's lost his wife and was turned into a monster, all thanks to Darkseid. His death at the hands of the Eradicator just seems like a mercy.
  • Les Yay: The scene with Diana and Lois at the restaurant is very heavy with lesbian subtext. They confide in each other heart to heart and aren't afraid to exchange some snarky banter with each other, much like a real life couple. Both of them stating that they don't have many "girlfriends" probably wouldn't raise much of an eyebrow, except Diana brings up first, in the context of it being odd for an Amazon. . . who, back home, would logically only have "girlfriends."
  • Moral Event Horizon: Lex's killing Dabney Donovan is this for Superboy, and what causes him to finally quit working for his "father." He even plans to call him out on it when he hears someone come into the room behind him, only to turn and discover it's Lois.
  • Narm: The scene where the boom tube falls from the sky and seemingly vaporizes the Justice League would normally be suspenseful, except the heroes stand completely motionless as they stare at the portal heading their way. What should be one of the tensest moments in the film becomes much more comical thanks to the heroes seemingly resigning to their fate and not even attempting to run/fly/phase/teleport away from harm.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: Many were excited to see how the animated films would handle the destruction of Coast City and Hal Jordan's Faceā€“Heel Turn, but those elements were removed from the story.
  • They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot:
    • Superman's return has gotten this reaction from a few viewers. A common criticism of the film so far is that it just sort of... happens without much buildup or fanfare.
    • Henshaw's Mooks are ordinary people who have accepted devices from him to give them superpowers (Apokolypse tech). It could have been a very interesting dilemma for the Justice League to be fighting ordinary people under mind control with Superman-like powers (if not necessarily his power levels) and trying not to permanently harm them. Instead they're treated as just disposable goons to be thrashed. Though some poignancy is regained when they all appear to die as the Apokolypse tech shuts down.
