• Ho Yay: Part of Lister's attempts to convince (the temporarily-solid) Rimmer that he cares about him involves putting his hand on Rimmer's leg, Rimmer looks shocked by this but not in a negative way. He only reacts negatively when Kryten (who presumably doesn't understand what a hand on the thigh means and is just copying what he sees) does the same thing.
• Special Effects Failure: The Self Loathing Beast was originally built as a monster for Doctor Who that was never used because it failed to live up to expectations.^note Specifically, it was supposed to be The Destroyer in the story "Battlefield" — albeit it was rejected largely in part because that story was originally supposed to feature the death of longtime recurring character Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, and the Doctor Who production team decided they didn't want him to spend his last minutes on-screen acting opposite a puppet, regardless of quality. The story would, in the event, be rewritten to have him survive. Think about that for a moment. Doctor Who, a show that especially in The '80s, was notorious for its cheap special effects, rejected the monster for being too crappy. Here, they cut around it as much as possible, only letting us have glimpses of it or of its extremities in the hopes the audience wouldn't notice. It's probably for the best. The whole thing can be seen in the deleted scenes on the Series V DVD.
