YMMV / Raven (DC Comics)

Go To

  • Can't Un-Hear It: Quite hard to not hear Tara Strong's version of Raven when reading the comics.
  • Fridge Brilliance
    • Raven's superhero suit, originally, was just the Azarath monastic robes she saw in Azarath, slightly modified. The New 52 version's eyesore of an outfit was designed by her father, perhaps as a finger in the eye to Azarath and everything it stood for. This would also explain the garish and over the top aspects of the costume.
    • The nature of her powers makes Raven a unique case of a rationalized Strong As She Needs to Be character. In theory her powers could be anything she wanted, in practice her hangups make achieving this nigh-impossible.
  • Fridge Horror
    • Due to the writers' inability to address whether or not skipping the Crisis on Infinite Earths had anything to do with Raven's instability or not, Raven potentially could remember not one but several retcons in a short term of her own friends and family and them as they originally were. This might explain both her skipping out altogether on prior crises and the inconsistencies in the New 52 take as a means of finally giving into them, in-universe.
    • At several points Raven's power levels are described as nigh infinite, and Raven herself as nearly unstoppable. If the writers ever wrote an Evil!Raven as credibly destructive as her father, Trigon, she could potentially emerge as an Umar counterpart in canon or an alternate universe.
    • Said situation has perhaps happened in Injustice: Gods Among Us.
  • Les Yay: Her and Starfire in many versions of the characters, notably in Teen Titans: Earth One.
  • Moment of Awesome:
    • Re-empowering Darkseid in Our Worlds At War, and leaving the God of Evil completely confused as to what Raven is.
    • Defeating Phobia in her white outfit days and giving her a brief Heel–Face Turn.
  • Heartwarming Moments
    • In the first issue of her 2016 miniseries, Raven has a nightmare in which her demonic brothers taunt and threaten her. Almost immediately, her aunt and uncle, who recently took her in, are at her side, making sure Raven is okay. As she's going back to sleep, she thinks to herself "Have I escaped the darkness of one family to find light in another? Perhaps coming here was the right thing after all." Made especially heartwarming when it's pointed out that Raven can feel the emotions of those around her, and can sense that her estranged family members just want her to be safe and happy.
    • The finale of the same miniseries, where Raven's aunt Alice, along with dozens of other civilians, lend her their power so she can stop The White Carnival. In the end, even though their memories were wiped, Raven's extended family give her a permanent place to stay, and welcome her completely. For the first time in the character's history, she has a real family.
  • Tear Jerker: Moments before Trigon's first reign of terror begins, Zatanna spills the beans on what Raven did to get Kid Flash to join the Titans, causing them all to distrust her and disband. Leaving her to tearfully beg them to come back for it is mere seconds until he arrives. What makes it a moment of heartwarming though is of all the Titans, Robin and Starfire are the ones that still believe her.
  • The Woobie: Her past and what she goes through could make you feel sorry for her.
    • Iron Woobie: She's the most hopeful of the team and tries her hardest to protect her friends no matter the situation.
    • Jerkass Woobie: Her witty remarks and sarcasm can make her this.
    • Stoic Woobie: Due to her keeping her emotions in check.
