YMMV / RWBY: The Official Manga

Go To

  • Complete Monster: Roman Torchwick, lacking his show counterpart's redeeming qualities, is a destructive sociopath and one of the most infamous criminals in Vale. He teams up with Cinder Fall and executes her schemes, organizing an attack on the city of Vale and planning to blow up a large section of the city's downtown area. At one point, he has Ruby Rose tied up, intending to have the White Fang torture her to death, and gleefully reveals that the purpose of the attack on Vale was to cause a Grimm invasion, which would destroy not just the city but the entire kingdom.
  • Ho Yay:
    • Chapter 4 opens with Ruby getting right up in Weiss' face, teasing her for being so cooperative compared to earlier, before thanking her for saving her with a huge smile, leaving Weiss blushing furiously. Later on, when they're getting into position to attack the Nevermore, Blake comments on Weiss saving Ruby's life, and how remarkable it is that Ruby seems to trust her so much already, despite their rocky start.
    • Chapter 6 starts with Ruby and Weiss arguing Like an Old Married Couple over Ruby swiping one of Weiss' notebooks after neglecting to take her own notes in several classes. As Yang and Blake look on, Yang comments that they're at it again, while Blake muses that she thinks they actually enjoy bickering with one another.
    • When Weiss apologizes to Blake after they're reunited, she's blushing (in embarrassment) while apologizing. Weiss then gets upset at Yang when Yang tells Blake about how worried Weiss was.
  • It's Short, So It Sucks!: The manga only covers the first two volumes of RWBY while cutting several scenes, making it incredibly short at only nineteen chapters and even referencing the fact that there are many unanswered questions.
  • It's the Same, Now It Sucks!: A complaint is that the manga adds little new to the narrative.
  • Magnificent Bitch: This version of Cinder Fall, lacking her series counterpart's sadism or childishness, is a beautiful and enigmatic villainess who wields a grudge on Vale's Headmaster Ozpin. She comes up with a scheme to destroy the kingdom of Vale, using abandoned railroads to launch the attack on the capital, and the resulting negativity keeps Grimm coming. She has the vile Roman Torchwick do the dirty work and steal Dust for the operation while she infiltrates Beacon Academy. As a skilled fighter, she is able to break into the Cross Continental Transmit System tower and implant an important virus, and is able to escape even after being caught by Ruby Rose.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: The main complaint about the manga is that it is a Compressed Adaptation that removes many scenes, such as the "Jaundice" arc and the "Burning the Candle" scene between Blake and Yang.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: Ironwood's face is drawn with more detail than the other characters', so some of his expressions seem a little... off.
