  • Award Snub: Lost out to Lionel Richie's Can't Slow Down for the Grammy Award for Album of the Year.
  • Awesome Music: The whole album. Along with 1999 and Sign o' the Times, it's considered one of the absolute best albums of Prince's career and one of the greatest, most iconic albums of the 1980s.
  • Ho Yay: The bit with Wendy and Lisa testing the water in a hot tub at the beginning of "Computer Blue."
  • Memetic Mutation: After Prince's death, the opening line from "Let's Go Crazy," "Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life," turned up a lot on the Internet.
  • Signature Song: The title track and "When Doves Cry" are two candidates in Prince's catalog.
  • Tough Act to Follow: While 1999 and Sign o' the Times are other strong contenders for Prince's best album, no other album in Prince's catalog has received the same cultural significance and commercial success. To this day, Purple Rain is one of the first things people mention in regard to Prince's legacy.
