YMMV / Project CARS

Go To

  • Awesome Music: The game uses similar "gladiator"-style music in the menus like in Shift 2: Unleashed although with original songs instead of remixes. One of the best goes to "Spa 24 Hours" with a One-Woman Wail that culminates in a guitar solo.
  • Broken Base: Project CARS 3 has torn a massive rift in the fanbase from the very moment it was formally announced, due to the direction the game is taking compared to the first two games. Hardcore sim racers have already dismissed the game, accusing it of being more arcade-like and removing certain simulation elements from the game while more casual fans seem to be on-board with the game being more of a spiritual successor to Slightly Mad's previous Need for Speed: Shift games, while some Take a Third Option by considering that Project CARS 3 is a decent game on its own right... but that it should have been part of a standalone series rather than as a sequel to the second game.
  • Difficult, but Awesome:
    • The McLaren F1 in Road B races, especially without assists like the real car. It's hard to control but it's incredibly satisfying and surprisingly nimble.
    • Going hardcore in general by setting the assists to be car-based (generally off), having no visual aids like the best line indicator and Driving Stick without any gear or clutch related assistance (meaning revv-matching is important to avoid stalling, lurching, or even spinning out on more sensitive cars, it's best to stay in gear until you clear a corner or curve, straighten out then shift down to the appropriate gear). It's incredibly hard but it feels great when you master any older manual car like the aforementioned F1.
  • Even Better Sequel: Project CARS 2. With particular compliments given to the revamped time of day and weather systems, a better-structured career mode, and vastly improved handling on controllers.
  • Fan Nickname: Calling Project CARS 3 Need for Speed: Shift 3 is fairly common given the game resembles the latter far more than it does to its prequels.
  • That One Achievement:
    • Sunday Driver: Complete a race at the Azure Coast without exceeding 50 km/h (31 mph) and it cannot be Free practice. Even if Quick Race Weekends don't affect the career, it still feels painful letting everybody else speed right on by.
    • A Day In The Life: Race an entire twenty-four hours in real time. It's obvious only 0.1% of people who own the game on Steam have this achievement because most sane people don't have the time, patience and/or a group of friends for this unless they've actually raced the real life 24 Hours of Le Mans or they're doing some kind of charity stream. Even then, they're not playing them alone.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy:
    • The first game is mostly known because of the cancellation of the overhyped and long-promised Wii U version and the developer's response to the fan backlash which wasn't very professional to say the least.
    • Both Bandai Namco and Slightly Mad Studios teased that a port of Project Cars 2 could be possible for Nintendo Switch if the fans show their interest on social sites (read: free publicity via port begging), but with the memory of the failed Wii U version and the comments on the above still fresh in their minds, many pledged to not support them.
  • Real Song Theme Tune: "My Pet Coelacanth" by deadmau5 has been used for the launch trailer. Interestingly enough, deadmau5 is actually a fan of Project CARS.
  • Sequelitis: Project CARS 3 is generally considered the nadir of the series due to removal of sim elements and making it harder to earn money in the career mode (instead of winning races, players have to level up), along with numerous flaws in its game design, making it poorly received by fans, while critics are bit more mixed. It didn't help that the game came after the generally-considered-terrible Fast & Furious Crossroads by the same developer. The one-two trip killed the studio, forcing it into support status.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: After suspicions from pre-release gameplay that pit stops had been blocked off in the first pre-release gameplay video of Project CARS 3, the confirmation that pit stops, fuel, and tire wear would be removed from the game in a pre-release dev blog has so far been poorly received by fans.
  • Visual Effects of Awesome: The second game nails the atmosphere of a thunderstorm pretty well, especially the way the cloud cover tends to have lighter patches in one direction while it's darker in another along with both heavy rain and the way wind kicks up clouds of mist.
