- Harsher in Hindsight:
- The deaths of Mariam and Yuliko in Princess Dzhavakha are very tragic on their own, but knowing that in Memoirs of an Institute Girl Nina, so lively and cheerful throughout Princess Dzhavakha, is going to die of the same disease as Yuliko is absolutely heartbreaking.
- Same goes for Nina saying goodbye to Georgia in Princess Dzhavakha. By itself, it's bittersweet, but then one learns that she never gets to return there.
- Sequelitis: While the More Popular Spin-Off Princess Dzhavakha still gets love, the following books rarely get published for a reason. It probably has something to do with the fact that Nina Dzhavakha dies in Memoirs of an Institute Girl.
- Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: A downplayed version, related to Sequelitis above. The series isn't very dark, but seeing major and well-liked characters getting killed off for apparently no reason except the Rule of Drama can become exhausting.
