• Questionable Casting: The casting of Donald Douglas as Franklin Clarke has raised some eyebrows. It's a plot point that Franklin is handsome, youthful and charismatic enough to act as Honey Trap for the much younger Betty Barnard so that he could lure her to the beach and kill her. In fact, one of the clues that tip Poirot off to the fact that Franklin is the killer and Cust is being framed is that there is no way Cust could seduce a girl, especially someone like Betty who prefers the glamorous type. Here, while Clarke's actor is quite good-looking, he is more of a grandfatherly sort rather than the dashing charmer from the novel, hence some fans considering the casting strange.
