The Book

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Ursula as a character can be considered as strange as Leon but at times more sane than him. Her actions at the end of the book after being driven over the edge can be seen as perhaps her not being so different from Leon after all. Since she could have turned Leon in or sent him somewhere for medical care, but she doesn't. It is also notable the film version of her drops most of this and she ends up moving out, marrying Stan and does make sure Leon has gotten care.
  • Squick: Well if the whole brother and sister having a threesome with an anatomically correct medical dummy wasn't the tip off this trope would be here....

The Film

  • Adaptational Displacement: The film in its cult status is more known than the book.
  • Broken Base: While the film is itself very well liked it did change some of the things the book was most known for. As a result this can crop up in that regards.
  • Cult Classic: The film has made several lists of ""Best horror films you've never seen". Those that have seen it tend to regard it as an overlooked gem of its era.
  • Retroactive Recognition: Leon is played by a young David Hewlett, who later became famous among sci-fi fans for his portrayal of Dr. Rodney McKay on Stargate Atlantis.
  • They Changed It, Now It Sucks!: While the overt sexual content and weirdness is Squick to many, it also was one of the things that made the book the freaky little story it was. The downplaying of some of this in the movie is a complaint wedged by the "book was better" crowd.
