YMMV / Pigs Is Pigs (1937)

  • Alternative Character Interpretation:
    • At least before The Reveal, anyway. Is the scientist fattening up Piggy just for the sake of it? Does he do it just to get off on it? Is he going to eat Piggy once he's fattened up properly? Or is it just a cruel way to murder the hapless kid? The fact that the scientist left some more food for Piggy after completely fattening him up, makes the fourth option likely.
    • Some have wondered whether Piggy actually remembered his nightmare at the end of the short especially given Piggy's cheeky grin at the camera as he runs down to eat breakfast. It's perfectly normal to forget your dreams, even if you remember them right when you wake up, and he may have just immediately forgotten and is smiling with glee that he's about to eat again. However, the short's dark, cynical tone implies that he truly didn't care even though he remembered his dream and went right back to stuffing himself.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Piggy, on whether he's sympathetic enough to the point where it's pure torture to see him in such pain or a real piece of work who starves his family out.
  • Common Knowledge: Piggy is occasionally mistaken for the much more well-known Porky Pig, but is in fact an entirely separate character. His character trait of gluttony would later be given to Hampton in Tiny Toon Adventures, and given Hampton is supposed to be Porky's younger counterpart, this may contribute to the confusion.
  • Crosses the Line Twice: With the short's Black Comedy approach, this was bound to happen. A child being locked in a stranger's house against his will and tortured for the stranger's sick kicks is absolutely horrifying on paper and invites a lot of uncomfortable thoughts. The fact it's happening to a gluttonous adorable piglet who is actually a greedy little brat who deserves some comeuppance makes it entertaining as it is horrifying to watch. Piggy's death is also quite comedic as it is disturbing given the cartoon sound effects and abrupt timing.
