• Nightmare Fuel: In "The Old Fools" the narrator describes the last days of the incontinent, senile inhabitants of a nursing home. ("Why aren't they screaming?")
• The Woobie: A lot of the speakers in his poems can come across as this, particularly the speaker in Aubade, who has a crappy job, probably no friends, and spends his free time being obsessed with - and deathly afraid of - death.
