YMMV / Overkill's The Walking Dead

Go To

  • Awesome Animation: About the only good thing that came out of this was that the trailers for the lead up to the game were cited to be well told and animated.
  • Designated Hero: Even if you're entirely justified, the sheer amount of humans you kill can make it feel like you're statistically doing more harm than good for the survival of the species. Though in the case of the Brigade, their ambient dialogue indicates they're slaughtering most other survivors they find around D.C., so taking them out is likely a net population gain in the long run.
  • Obvious Beta: Things like walkers phasing through doors are a common occurrence, the enemy AI in general is barely competent, barricades can randomly break on their own, there is no in-game voice chat, crashes are frequent and in some cases can corrupt one's save, the loading times are both frequent and lengthy, the levels are rife with invisible walls and lazy enemy spawns, the game's overall performance is poor on otherwise capable machines despite Unreal Engine 4's ease of optimisation and there is no option to change the target monitor. The game's myriad of technical problems both on release and in the months to follow almost certainly had an impact on Skybound's decision to terminate their contract with Starbreeze.
  • Overshadowed by Controversy: The game itself was quickly forgotten when the full extent of its Troubled Production, Starbreeze's gross financial mismanagement under Bo Andersson, atrocious crunch time and working conditions the dev team had to go through during the last months of development and allegations of insider trading within Starbreeze came into light soon after the release.
  • The Problem with Licensed Games: Considered to be a boring wave-based shooter and a Strictly Formula zombie game with The Walking Dead license by many, to the point that the low-rated The Walking Dead: Survival Instinct was considered better by many of its detractors. The game is even lacking in the music department, something that was one of the major selling point of OVERKILL's previous game.
