- Growing the Beard: The 1923-29 shorts started to rely less on the rotoscope in favor of more cartoonish animation (thanks to animator, Dick Huemer).
- Once Original, Now Overdone: The rotoscope, considered a revolutionary piece of animation technology when these shorts debuted, is now something of a swear word amongst animators and animation fans, particularly after becoming synonymous with "cheap hack job" in The '80s.
- Seasonal Rot: Some fans consider the 1927-29 shorts to be inferior to the earlier shorts in terms of story structure and gags.
- Values Dissonance: Some of the gags and/or plotlines in the original silent shorts would either come off as racist and/or offensive today.
