YMMV / Only the Brave Can Rescue the Kidnapped Princess

Go To

  • Accidental Innuendo: One of the King's animations has him glance slightly downwards, often making it look like he's ogling the breasts or nether regions of the person he's talking to.
  • Big-Lipped Alligator Moment: One of the items the troll can request from the player is a pair of sunglasses. The vendor who gives this item is a talking donkey who, when approached, sings a random blues number about how cool his sunglasses are (while wearing what appears to simply be a normal pair of glasses) before handing the item over. This is the only song in the game to not be sung by a major character, and the donkey never shows up again afterwards.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse: The King, who is easily the most memorable and entertaining character. His "I Love My Food" song spawned a meme and has become the best-known part of the game.
  • Fan Nickname: When he isn't simply called "the King," the unnamed king is usually either referred to as "King Crunchy Munchy" or "the Food Loving King."
  • Ham and Cheese: Sir John Standing was clearly having a blast recording the King's lines.
  • Hilarious in Hindsight: The King's personality is basically identical to the way King Harkinian is often characterized in YouTube Poops.
  • Inferred Holocaust: One of the minigames is a shooting gallery where Muggins battles several of Blackheart's soldiers with his magic. Right after, it's revealed that the princess was never kidnapped after all, and Muggins knew where the princess was, so he just attacked Blackheart's army for no reason. The repercussions of the King ordering an unprovoked attack on a neighboring region's army are never addressed, but Blackheart now has a valid reason to declare war, and since an earlier scene established that the King fired all of his soldiers, he'd have no way to defend himself if that happened.
  • Memetic Mutation: The King's "I Love My Food" song became a popular YouTube Poop source around 2010. It helped that the song dovetailed perfectly with another red-haired king associated with eating.
  • Nightmare Fuel: The King's freakishly large, soullessly staring eyes during the "I Love My Food" scene can be a tad unsettling to look at.
  • Signature Scene: The King singing "I Love My Food."
  • Signature Song: "I Love My Food."
  • So Bad, It's Good: Mostly during the "I Love My Food" scene. The repetitive animation, the King's exuberant singing contrasted with him spending most of the song either soullessly staring at the camera or dancing with a bored expression on his face, the random electric guitar solo, and the silly lyrics ("Crunchy munchy delightful divine, I just love eating all of the time!") make it hard to sit through the scene with a straight face.
  • Special Effect Failure: When Lucky moves from the front of a room to the back, it sometimes winds up looking less like he's moving away from the camera and more like he's shrinking.
  • That One Level: Judging by the comments on this video, many people never saw anything past the river level. You have to dodge many obstacles and make many turns very quickly, and crashing will set you back a long way. On top of that, it might become unplayably fast on some computers.
  • Unintentional Uncanny Valley: The game's semi-realistic art style combined with its low animation budget made this an inevitability. As off-putting as the King's Off-Model stare from the "I Love My Food" scene is, the way he normally looks may be even worse.
  • Unpopular Popular Character: The King is widely disliked by other characters for his Jerkass behavior. Out of universe, however, he's the game's most popular character for his very entertaining vocal performance and for providing the game's Signature Scene.
  • Watch It for the Meme: "I Love My Food" is the main reason most people remember the game.
