• Angst Aversion: The tear jerker final episode tends to be the one thing people know about the show, and it sometimes discourages potential viewers from investing their time in it.
• Cliché Storm: Magical girl? Check. Love interests? Check. Monster of the week (or bishounen, in this case)? Check. Magical kingdom ruled by a queen? Check. Despite all of this, it's still pretty good...but then the final episode REALLY makes a point in subverting the cliché happy ending in favor of a more poignant Bittersweet Ending.
• Growing the Beard: Status Quo Is God for the first chunk of the show, but after a while (around the point when Kanon dies) this stops being true. Events in the show aren't just fun and games anymore; there are lasting consequences.
• No Yay: Buros gets a bit touchy-feely with Dewey at times, and there is nothing appealing about that, especially since Dewey appears to be about the same age as Kanon. ...And then there's that one downright uncomfortable I Have You Now, My Pretty scene between them. Thankfully Dewey turns it around on Buros in spectacular fashion.
• Tear Jerker: The final episode is notoriously waterworks-inducing from beginning to end, due in no small part to everyone in the voice cast just acting their hearts out.
• Viewer Name Confusion: Is Helena a queen or a princess? The fansub scripts - written in the 90s and still widely used decades later - call her "Queen Helena," but in the Japanese version she is an oujo, a term which specifically means the daughter of a king. Mimina is also an oujo but the fansubs do call her a princess.
