- Harsher in Hindsight: When Beryl sees a tree branch fall onto and destroy a neighbor's fountain, she says she's afraid this will be the year God finally lowers the boom on her. Jessica Tandy, who plays Beryl, died three months before the film was released.
- Jerkass Woobie: Clive Jr. Yes, he spies on Sully, isn't really that competent (this is more pronounced in the book), and flees town after the investors pull their money out, but given how things turn out, it's hard not to feel sorry for him.
- One-Scene Wonder: Philip Bosco as Judge Flatt only appears in two scenes, but thanks to his being a Deadpan Snarker extraordinaire, they're among the funniest scenes in the movie.
- Retroactive Recognition: Philip Seymour Hoffman and Margo Martindale each have one of their earliest roles here; he plays Officer Raymer, she plays Birdie.
