- Base-Breaking Character: The guest fighters used in all of their games so far with the possible exception of Spawn for Mortal Kombat 11.
- Broken Base: The team has a habit for all their fighting games to patch them once every month. One side of the fanbase (casual) thinks this is fine, since it essentially keeps the game fresh each month, the other half (competitive/FGC) looks down on this practice since it needlessly changes the meta game instead of giving them a chance to properly evaluate and adapt to the game. It only got worse in the case of MKX after people were complaining about one of Tri-Borg's variationsnote and NRS immediately released an emergency patch that completely nerfed it to near-useless status.
- Complete Monster: See here and here.
- Rated M for Money: Unsurprisingly given the team is behind one of the most violent fighting series ever made. The 2011 MK reboot, Mortal Kombat X and Mortal Kombat 11 are the most violent Mortal Kombat games ever made to date, and even Injustice: Gods Among Us and Injustice 2, their least violent entries, were pushing for how much the T rating can allow before going into M rating territory. And that's saying something.
- Trolling Creator: Take anything said or tweeted by Ed Boon with a grain of salt.
- Unexpected Character: All of the guest fighters so far.
- Win Back the Crowd: Seen as a long overdue return to form, the reboot of Mortal Kombat was greeted favorably by fans and critics alike.
