YMMV / NF

Go To

  • Alternate Aesop Interpretation: Is the message of love from the song "If You Want Love" supposed to be a heartwarming tune of encouragement, especially when NF mentions hoping to tell his kids one day, or is it a cynical and bitter Anti-Love Song about what a person often resorts to doing to feel love?
  • Alternate Character Interpretation: In the music video for "Let You Down", is the old man watching NF drown his father or somehow a future version of NF thinking of a situation playing differently in his head? The woman addressing the older man as Nathan at the end of the video suggests the latter.
  • Awesome Music: Pretty much everything.
  • Broken Base: The usage of Auto-Tune for guest singer Sasha Sloan's vocals in "Only". Fans either like/tolerate it while others think it's too distracting and undermines her singing ability.
  • Critical Dissonance: Perception was considered So Okay, It's Average by some critics, with many praising his songwriting skills but some, particularly this one, noting that his musical style feels the same as his previous albums and his more boastful raps come off as cocky and a bit annoying. However, given the fact this album brought NF to the mainstream, it has a higher positive reaction from the audiences.
  • Funny Moments: In the song "Grindin'", Marty going out of his way to pause this song and target the parents of those disappointed by their works. It's all in the timing.
They don't like us and we question they moms like
"Why did...why did you allow your kid to like bad music?"
  • Heartwarming Moments:
    • From Therapy Session, "If You Want Love". Not only is it arguably one of NF's most beautiful songs, it talks about the hard work it takes to both find and give away love. However, its lyrics are often debated whether they are sad or heartwarming, so many also see it as a Tear Jerker.
      • The music video makes it even more heartwarming and tear-jerking.
    • From HOPE, "MAMA" serves as Nathan's growth from "How Could You Leave Us", having forgiven and understood his mother by this point, made especially poignant by the song's closing two lines:
I just hope you finally got some peace and you feel happy
    Mom, I love you
    • "You'll always be Mama to us, we'll save a table for 4."
  • Narm:
    • The masked figures in the music video for "Therapy Session" seem intimidating at first until NF casually places his arms on their shoulders as if they were all buddies.
    • This one lyric from "Mansion":
    'Cause if I do, there's a chance
That they might disappear and not come back
And I admit I am emotionally scared
  • Signature Song:
    • Mansion: the title track
    • Therapy Session: the title track and "How Could You Leave Us?"
    • Perception: "Let You Down"
    • The Search: the title track and "Time"
  • Suspiciously Similar Song: "Paralyzed" and "Lost in the Moment" sound very similar in melody and rhythm. However, "Paralyzed" becomes more energetic toward the end.
  • Tear Jerker: Has its own page.
  • The Moral Substitute: Many people have commented on the similarity between NF's musical style and Eminem's, including both NF and Eminem (the latter was not happy about it). But what you won't find on an NF album is any of the foul language, violence or comedic drug antics that you will be able to find on any Eminem album.
  • Too Bleak, Stopped Caring: While NF's Darker and Edgier tone is very well-received due to its rarity in faith-based music, there are a few people who find his music too gloomy and depressing and others who feel like he's trying too hard to be edgy. However, NF himself is aware of those people and even Lampshades it in "Therapy Session".
"Why don't you write us some happy raps?
    That would be awesome!"
"All of your music is moody and dark, Nate"
    Don't get me started!
    • Ironically, his newest album Perception is actually not as dark as Mansion or Therapy Session.
