YMMV / Mystery Science Theater 3000 S08 E14: Riding with Death

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Servo's ode to the 70's (that is, 70-79 A.D.), as well as "Do You Remember the 50's?" (same mistake).
    Back in the funky seventies
    the party didn't ever stop!
The city of Pompeii was doin' alright
    But Vesuvius blew her top!
  • Funny Moments:
    • Mike is unimpressed with Servo's new foam-latex "trucker" body:
      Mike: You have no butt!
Servo: Hold on there Mike, that's no way to talk to my new butt!
Mike: No, no I think you're hideous. You're buttless and skinny and no, no. [Walks away]
Servo: Ah, you're just jealous, Nelson! I have a fine butt! You wish you had my butt! I like my butt!!
    • The New England Journalist jokes.
    • "Boy, I hope it never stops being The '70s or we'll all be in trouble."
  • Hilarious in Hindsight:
    • Mike's riff of "We'd like you to consider Scientology!" when thugs attack Casey in the second part of the "movie" takes on new meaning in these times of South Park and Anonymous.
    • Mike also does a riff about Sam getting his "swine flu results" as part of a larger running gag about this clearly being the 1970s. In light of the swine flu scare of 2009, however...
  • Ho Yay: When Robert Denby accuses Leonard of harassing him, Crow riffs as Leonard: "So I pinched your butt once!"
  • Memetic Mutation: The series of truck-based Double Entendre gags. Most famously, Transformers fan "Dinobot" (after the Beast Wars character) had one of these gags quoted in his signature immediately after his Usenet tagline:
Dinobot has spoken. My rigid grill structure is bearing down on your unprotected cargo door. — Tom Servo Riding With Death
    • Dinobot's voice actor, Scott McNeil, was actually convinced to say the "rigid grill structure" line in-character at a convention.
    • Incidentally, this episode seems to be the major contributor to the MSTing meme/Running Gag of Crow making lewd jokes and getting a First-Name Ultimatum chastised by Joel or Mike. Which is also an example of Character Exaggeration.
