YMMV / Mystery Diners

Go To

  • Ass Pull: Whenever there's a situation that the regular cameras can't see, they always conveniently have a piece of technology that will work at that exact moment.
    • One episode had Charles Stiles proudly announce that his team would be using a "stingray" (a cellular interception tool) to read text messages suspected problem employees were sending to one another. Even if Mystery Diners had gotten their hands on an actual stingray device, using it would have violated state wiretapping laws and FCC regulations.
  • Awesome, but Impractical: The Mystery Diners crew themselves. While getting their help in weeding out bad employees sounds like an interesting experience, simply confronting the bad employees yourself or calling the police would likely get the problem done faster.
  • Critic-Proof: The show has lasted for eleven seasons despite criticism over some of the situations in the show being so over-the-top that it doesn't seem real. Or else everything is just too suspiciously neat with no loose ends or unresolved situations - almost like a scripted drama.
  • Fridge Logic: The show gets a lot of criticism over the fact that some of the situations going on at the restaurants seem so over the top that it's hard to believe that no one had complained before the owners called for the Mystery Diners, or the owners themselves didn't simply call the police instead of going through the trouble of getting the Mystery Diners help.
  • Heartwarming Moments: Any time an employee is brought to the control room to be praised for their hard work, especially if they had been a suspect of the episode.
  • Memetic Mutation: "Charles Stiles, Mystery Diners."
    • Several due to ralphthemoviemaker, including "sum shush concerns," "cheat at the Cheesie's Challenge," "release the drone," and the Iraqi food cart.
