YMMV / My Little Pony: The Movie Prequel

  • Broken Base: Since this marks the Storm King's first appearance outside promotional artwork, his rather comical Affably Evil depiction is this. On the one hand, people who dislike it note that there was absolutely zero indicator beforehand that he would have such a jovial personality, saying it clashes with his dark and intimidating design, expression, and posture. On the other hand, others are perfectly fine with the series having a villain who treats others with respect for once, if only for his own ends, keeping him from being a pale imitation of the show's darker villains like King Sombra and Lord Tirek as many first perceived. The later reveal that this persona exactly carries over into the trailer didn't do it much favors.
  • First Installment Wins: After seeing The Movie, many fans prefer this version of The Storm King as opposed to his Stupid Evil and Anti-Climax Boss self there.
  • Harsher in Hindsight: The Storm King's Pragmatic Villainy streak and his Et Tu, Brute? reaction to Strife's Starscream moment here. In The Movie, The Storm King turns out to be similar— he seems to have forgotten all about said Pragmatic Villainy and ends up pulling a You Have Outlived Your Usefulness of his own against Tempest just For the Evulz.
  • He's Just Hiding:
    • Even though the Storm King threw him off his air ship while high in the air, many think Strife survived and is still plotting against the Storm King.
    • Chummer, Capper's friend. Though his ship crashed outside of Klugetown, Tempest sees cat-like footprints leading away from the ship, indicating that he survived the initial crash. Whether he survived the desert is another question, but many fans think it's likely.
  • Tainted by the Preview: The Storm King's appearance in the Issue #1 preview as a fourth wall-breaking, ridiculously friendly villain has alienated several readers who were expecting a character that matched his fearsome design.
