- Author's Saving Throw: The story is essentially one to the "Root of the Problem" arc in the main comic which likewise tried to go for a Green Aesop but was filled with unlikeable characters (namely The Deer) and an uninteresting villain that bungled the message it was trying to convene. This story does it a bit better by keeping it to a new forest named White Tail Woods (as opposed to the Everfree), keeps it strictly to the official characters (The only comic exclusive one is the titular Spirit of the Forest and it doesn't play a direct role in the story other than a legend), explores both the pros and cons on both sides of the conflict (A businessman with well-intentions, not damaging the forest beyond recognition, recognizing how the is mill is essential for the townsponies and ultimately the compromises to keep things in balance) and keeps everyone in character to boot. It even gets bonus points for showing Character Development for Diamond Tiara post-HeelFace Turn.
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Character: Slight one, but many wonder why Silver Spoon couldn't help with the situation considering, y'know, she's Tiara's best friend?
- They Wasted a Perfectly Good Plot: While it's a good story, some critisim does note how the CMC and Tiara don't really work together completely through the story save for in the first issue cleaning up the forest (The CMC get most of the focus in the second one and Tiara pretty much has solves the problem herself in the third issue).
YMMV / My Little Pony: Spirit of the Forest
