• Accidental Aesop: The whole 'cheating using wings' argument Applejack and Rainbow Dash have after the Iron Pony competition delves into Rainbow saying that there was no rule against using her wings. Despite's AJ's retort that the rule was implied, it does give a subtle lesson about how you should establish rules in order to have a fair game, including rules that will kibosh whatever unfair advantage your competition has in order to avoid an unjust Loophole Abuse.
• Designated Villain: Quite a few fans see Applejack as this in comparison to Dash. Which isn't without merit, given how Dash is the instigating cheater in both the Iron Pony competition and the Running of the Leaves, not to mention how Applejack still keeps trying to do things fairly until Dash finally pushes her too far.
• Epileptic Trees: The oddity of its being Fall just two episodes after the arrival of Spring resulted in many theories that the show is actually in Anachronic Order, and trying to figure out which order the episodes actually take place in.
  • Or it's the results of the writers who had no idea yet that the show would have an audience who would be interested in continuity, and far older than 12.
• Genius Bonus: Twilight's advice is a common one among runners, which is basically shortened to "ten slow miles are needed to balance every fast mile". Besides Dick Dastardly Stops to Cheat, Rainbow Dash and Applejack are consistently going all-out, which also leads to them being slower than everyone else at the end when their energy is spent.
• Jerkass Woobie: It's hard not to feel sorry for Rainbow Dash and Applejack when they find out that they came in last place.
• Unintentionally Sympathetic: Rainbow Dash gloating over winning the Iron Pony after she blatantly cheated makes Applejack a hell of a lot easier to root for in the cheating war than she really should be.
