- Moral Event Horizon: The grandmother is a sympathetic enough character, and seems to be doing her best in a difficult situation. Until she finds out that her son has raped her granddaughter and does nothing to stop it.
- The Woobie: All of the girls, but especially Selma and Ece. Selma has to marry a complete stranger who she doesn't love at all, and Ece is raped and Driven to Suicide.
