YMMV / Mission: Yozakura Family

Go To

  • Adorkable: Mutsumi, despite often seen as an elegant girl, often has her dorky moments she isn’t afraid to show, When Mutsumi sees that a Beluga Whale imitates her movements, she starts posing and dancing. Her dignified demeanor often completely falls apart whenever Taiyo does anything romantic for her.
  • Ass Pull: Chapter 32 reveals the Yozakura siblings' grandparents are still alive, despite the previous chapters implying that all their relatives had died. Ban's prior absence is handwaved away as him being in prison at the time, but why Keiko didn't attend her own granddaughter's wedding or was never as much as mentioned to Taiyo is never explained.
  • Base-Breaking Character: Kyoichiro. Many people either find him as a interesting character or just a creepy stalker due to his obsession with Mutsumi (his younger sister).
  • Broken Base: The non-plot driven chapters. While some find them heartwarming, others find it a drag.
  • Cult Classic: Mission: Yozakura Family hasn't generated the same buzz as much higher profile publications like Jujutsu Kaisen or Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. But it's well-liked enough to be continuously serialized for years when many of the manga it debuted with have since been canceled.
  • Ensemble Dark Horse:
    • Out of the Yozakura Family, Shion gets a lot of love from readers for her cute design, Gamer Chick appeal, and her personality.
    • Nanao as well became one after Chapter 32.
    • Sui, despite him not having a major role in the series, became a fan favorite as well.
  • Fandom Rivalry: Given their spy-related premise, both this series and Spy X Family are often being compared to each other.
  • Friendly Fandoms:
    • With Reborn! (2004) with many people calling the series its Spiritual Successor.
    • You can also find many Yozakura fans being fans of Undead Unluck and Mashle: Magic and Muscles due to them debuting around the same time Explanation
    • Some compare this to Hunter × Hunter due to both the Zoldyck and Yozakura Families along with Killua and Hifumi both having Yo-Yos.
  • Growing the Beard: After Taiyo and Mutsumi's official wedding and the introduction of Hinagiku, it's widely agreed the series improved in quality, as it stopped continually introducing new characters and concepts every chapter and instead stuck to developing more of what it had, including finally giving the Yozakura siblings some proper development after being Out of Focus for much of the series until then. The Kuroyuri Arc especially got a good amount of praise from readers, owing to the effective Tone Shift and the Character Development given to Taiyo.
  • Memetic Mutation: It exists. Explanation
  • Never Live It Down: Downplayed and Played for Laughs. Mutsumi becoming more and more in love with Taiyo to the point that many fans refer to her as a simp. It doesn’t help that she later created merchandise and a cult based around her love for Taiyo.
  • Nightmare Fuel: Momo Yozakura. He slaughters countless innocents for their blood, carries around his dead wife's heart in a jar, creates Botanical Abomination Puppeteer Parasites, and even brainwashes his own children, all the while acting like he's any other quirky father.
  • Rescued from the Scrappy Heap: A lot of people who weren't fond of Kyoichiro's character, especially with his obsession with Mutsumi, later became a fond of him as the series progressed.
  • Spiritual Successor: The premise, tone, and episodic format of this series can make it this for Reborn! (2004) and Assassination Classroom.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: While there are tons of action and dramatic moments, the series is often known for its sweet family moments between the Yozakura siblings and the wholesome relationship between Taiyo and Mutsumi, where the two are often hailed as the best-written couple in Weekly Shonen.
  • Tear Jerker: Living through a car crash that killed the rest of his family is hard enough on Taiyo, but a later flashback shows that his little brother Hide was still breathing when he regained consciousness. Pinned in the wreckage and too badly wounded to move, Taiyo couldn't do anything but watch as his brother died.
  • The Woobie: Nanao. His hulking appearance is a side-effect of his immunity to poisons, so he takes a drug that shrinks his body down so that he can go to school. Eventually, he starts developing an immunity to the drug, which means he'll be stuck looking like a brute, and his appearance makes him feel alienated from other, "normal" people.
