YMMV / Miss Machiko

Go To

  • Adaptation Displacement: The anime is vastly more remembered than the original manga on which it is based. There were also multiple live-action movies, some with high-profile casts.
  • Best Known for the Fanservice: Obviously, the main point of this series was fanservice so it's easy to overlook the fact that the show involved episodes about a Haunted House, Sea Monster, and more than a few episodes where Machiko and her students take on criminals.

  • "Seinfeld" Is Unfunny: This series is one of the Ur Examples of ecchi anime. As a result, it can seem rather tame as the genre has spent the intervening 35+ years pushing the envelope as far as it can go. Unlike its successors and despite the series's nudity, there's surprisingly little sexual in nature about it — Miss Machiko is at its core a typical children's cartoon of the era… that somehow revolves around the female protagonist having her breasts and/or butt exposed, odd as that may sound.
  • Values Dissonance: Hoo boy. A show where the main female protagonist (sometimes along with her underage female students) is a constant victim of what today would be classed as sexual assault, along with humiliation public and private thanks to her male students, who are rarely punished for their actions because the headmaster waves it off with "Boys will be boys", and it's all Played for Laughs? There's no way this show could have ever made it out of Japan.
  • What Do You Mean, It's for Kids?: A Kids' show! about 12/13-year-olds sexually molesting their teacher, who can't keep her clothing on or intact for more than a few hours. In reality it is somewhat tame by modern standards, although the Parental Bonus is blatant.
    • 1980s Japan simply didn't care about nipples as much; indeed also the female students are involved in fanservice scenes despite their age (see also: Dragon Ball, Doraemon, Esper Mami...).
