  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Considering the ambiguity of what we see of Anna's parents, especially the flashbacks of her late biological father and the scenes of her cold stepfather, how much of her manipulative tendences can be attributed to her own personality as opposed to a bleak and possibly abusive socialite upbringing?
  • Germans Love David Hasselhoff: Subverted in that the film is both American and Spanish (it was directed by a Spaniard, shot in United States and co-produced by both), but reception in said countries was vastly different. American critics gave the film a general meh, while Spanish reviews were rave and nominated it for a handful of awards.
  • He Really Can Act: Strong' and Farmiga's performances were consistently acclaimed even by the least thrilled reviewers, with Farmiga, being just at her fourth film role at this point, showing she could belivably carry half of a film on her shoulders.
  • One-Scene Wonder: Noah Taylor as the creepy but ultimately helpful Peter Lundgren.
  • Paranoia Fuel: The owner of the memories screened by a Mindscape detective doesn't always realize he is in a memory, but sometimes can spot the detective himself as a shadowy figure at the background...
  • The Woobie: John. Before the events of the film, he lost his wife, suffered a stroke and became a financially ruined alcoholic. And during the events of the film, he gets callously utilized by a person he developed somewhat of an emotional attachment with, is framed as a murderer and goes to jail for an undisclosed amount of time.
