YMMV / Mike Love

Go To

  • Base-Breaking Character: While it's undeniable that Mike played a crucial role in The Beach Boys' success in the early 60's, he's also very unpopular among some fans for being responsible for much of the stinkers that the band put out in their later years. Some of the band's material under his leadership is so bad that he currently holds the title of being the resident "serial offender" of the horrible music index, with his name being mentioned no less than six times.
  • Memetic Mutation: The live performance of the intro to the Beach Boys song "Be True To Your School" (most specifically its opening lyric "when") has been extended by Mike since the early eighties. This has become a Running Gag (both acknowledged by Mike and the fans) where Mike tries to sing the longest "when" possible.
    • This video compiles all the "When" who were recorded live.
  • The Scrappy: Mike is probably the least popular member of the original band, especially among Brian or Dennis loyalists who (somewhat) unfairly blame him for squandering their creative songwriting and turning the band into an oldies act.
