YMMV / Miitomo

Go To

  • Nightmare Fuel: The "Serious" and "Resolve" faces. The former, when a Mii is triggered to show it, causes the game to suddenly zoom into the Mii's face with a dramatic sound as the Mii briefly develops realistic angry eyebrows, eyes, and lips. The latter has no zoom, but the resulting face- black Hidden Eyes drawn in a realistic style with and a giant, thick, frowning mouth is creepy on it's own. These faces can be triggered by saying "Really", "Actually" and "Seriously" for the Serious face, and "Waiting" for the Resolve face.
  • Older Than They Think: Miitomo is far from the first time a Nintendo game appeared on a console that's not their own. Nintendo games were released on modern arcade machines manufactured by Bandai Namco Entertainment (Mario Kart Arcade GP series), Capcom (Mario Party) and Sega (F-Zero AX, Rhythm Heaven). And if you don't count modern arcade games, "Mario Teaches Typing" would be the first. And if you don't count PC games, Hotel Mario would be the first, though it's been widly accepted that Nintendo considers them Old Shames. Even before Hotel Mario and Mario Teaches Typing, was when Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Jr. and Mario Bros. were on multi-platform consoles. While Miitomo is the first mobile app published by Nintendo, this isn't their first mobile app as a whole. Pokédex for iOS, published by The Pokémon Company, takes that place.
  • Scrappy Mechanic:
    • Trying to add friends. You can only add friends by discovering them via mutual friends, linking your social media accounts and having friends (Facebook) and mutual followers (Twitter), or in person; you're not given a username or even a "friend code" so that you can add people and vice versa. While the idea is to prevent users from being added by random people they don't know, it does mean that adding friends who fail to fulfill any of the above conditions is impossble. Don't bother trying those QR codes that your Miitomo-using friends share, as all it does is allow you to make copies of their Mii.
      • This has since been updated, as you can send a friend request through e-mail.
    • Every time you change your Mii's outfit, the next time you go through a conversation with them, they'll show you a Miifoto of themselves and request that you show it off. Unlike Miifotos of the Day, the pictures tend to be nothing special unless you edit them, and whether you want to show them off or not, you still have to tap through a few menus until you can get back to listening to/answering questions. Again, this happens every single time an outfit is changed through the clothing menu, so players aiming for the daily My Nintendo challenges have to deal with it at least once a day.
      • And if you do like showing off Miifotos in-game, changing clothes is the only way to do so. While it doesn't straight up cripple photo sharing, it is a little unintuitive to have to change outfits just to publish a photo for your Miitomo friends.
    • The game will not launch if you're using a rooted Android device or jailbroken iOS device. Presumably the idea is to prevent people from cheating by using backed-up data, but it's a hassle for people who have their devices rooted/jailbroken for other apps that require it.
    • If you're extremely unlucky, your Mii may only rarely leave his/her room and visit another Mii, since you cannot command a Mii to leave at will.
    • Want to get a fancy new Wallpaper? You have to win it in Miitomo Drop games in the same way you win special outfits. Expect lots and lots of Candy in the process.
  • That One Sidequest: The Mii Drop games if you're not familiar with the timing. Even worse with some like the Baked Goods #3 where if you want to get rewards like the Toast Pin, you have to time yourself with not only the bumper stars to bring you up, but the bumper on the bottom as well. There's also the awkward hitboxes of the Miis themselves in general, which are also quite bouncy, meaning your Mii that landed perfectly on a prize platform may either bounce off if it was going too fast or slip off if it was two close to the edge.
  • Win Back the Crowd:
    • In July 2016 Miitomo got updated, adding another "My Nintendo" mission to answer a Question of the Day and removing the already common Candy to the Daily Rewards in July.
    • The retool to Candies. Starting in July 2016, Candies were no longer given as daily rewards and Miis no longer requested candy if the player wanted to hear more than three questions from that Mii. Then the Candy Drop game was added which gives the players opportunities to use those otherwise undesired Candies to win more tickets.
